eixample
Eixample means "enlargement, expansion, or extension." So called because the district expanded economically and physically with the much awaited demolition of walls, connecting it to outlying towns. The area is filled with Modernist architecture.
Antonio Gaudi's La Sagrada Familia is one of the landmark attractions in this district. It is his masterpiece. He dedicated his remaining years designing and helping with its construction. He donated everything he had to realize this dream. Unfortunately, he died before its completion. It is still a work in progress. It may need another 50 years to bring it to total completion. The back side depicts the 14 Stations of the Cross while the facade is intricately decorated with the 3 Mysteries of the Rosary.
