Santa Fe's spectacular setting and brilliant light have always been an inspiration to artists. Arts and artistic endeavors are a major part of the visitors' experience in Santa Fe. The town has always been a center for artistic expression. This is evident not only in the museums and art galleries that line the streets of Santa Fe, but also in restaurants where trend-setting chefs are artists in their own rights.

Despite its small size and remote location, Santa Fe sells so much art. Today there are more than 250 shops and galleries in Santa Fe selling works of local artists. It has an art market comparable to that of Paris or New York. It is one of the three premier art markets in the world. There is art for every taste and much of it is very affordable. Gallery workers are even happy and willing to share their expertise.

The best are found on Canyon Road a.k.a. Gallery Road, a mile-long gallery district where one could hop from gallery to gallery, enjoy the new shows, and meet the artists. It has shows that promote the expensive works of established painters while others feature many emerging artists, many of whom are locals.

THE GEORGIA O'KEEFFE MUSEUM

Georgia O'Keeffe is the most famous of many 20th and 21st century artists who lived in Santa Fe. The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in downtown Santa Fe houses the biggest collection of her works. She is famous for her paintings of of enlarged plants and flowers. She was attracted and stimulated by the intense colors, sharp contrasts, and extraordinary landscapes of New Mexico.

She lived at her Ghost Ranch house in Abiquiu, New Mexico from 1945-1986.

SHIDONI FOUNDRY

We visited the outdoor gallery of Shidoni Foundry, a sculpture workshop along Bishop's Lodge Road. They had a lot of interesting artworks displayed in their yard as shown in the photos below. We were particularly attracted to these bronze giraffes and garments hanging from a clothesline.
