Itatiaia National Park, Brazil

Itatiaia mtns Itatiaia National Park is located two hours drive west of Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Founded in 1951, Itatiaia (pronounced "Ee-Tah-Tee-Ya-Ya") is the oldest, and in many ways, the most beautiful of Brazil's national parks. Tree fern The terrain of the Park is mountainous, ranging from 3,000 feet to over 9,000 feet in elevation. A series of trails gives access to pristine forest and rushing streams. Stream
Houses in the Park For years before the park was founded, Itatiaia was a favorite destination to escape the heat of the summer lowlands. IBAMA permits houses and hotels built before the region became a national park to remain. So there are several options for lodging inside the park. Hotel
